It’s not often a debut title by a developer receives universal acclaim on release, but Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has beaten the odds and become the highest-rated video game released in 2025 so far on Metacritic.
With only one year left to live, join Gustave, Maelle, and their fellow Expeditioners as they embark upon a desperate quest to break the Paintress’ cycle of death. Follow the trail of previous expeditions and discover their fate. Get to know the members of Expedition 33 as they learn to work together against impossible odds.
Launching on Thursday, the game has attracted Universal Acclaim with a Metascore of 92, and a score of 91 on OpenCritic. The RPG sits beside some great company with legendary titles like Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, Chrono Trigger, and Undertale, also sitting at a score of 92.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 shot to the top of the Best Game This Year list, sharing the top spot with Blue Prince, which deservingly also rests at a Metascore of 92.
