The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is a new controller released by 8BitDo that aims to take that nostalgic feel and build of the original Nintendo 64 controller, blending it with a more ergonomic, comfortable, and modern design.

Upon unboxing the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller, my immediate first impression was that it looks like a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller with the iconic Nintendo 64 button designs. The controller feels durable and fits comfortably into my hands. I never owned a Nintendo 64, however, I did use the console quite a lot in my childhood, and I always struggled with the ergonomics of the controller back then.

The controller boasts a built-in rumble and a hall-effect joystick, which assists with precision and looks and feels identical to the original N64 gamepad despite being in a different position. Alongside the iconic joystick are the C-buttons (without the C), A/B buttons, and Start buttons. 8BitDo designed this controller alongside the Analogue 3D, and they look like a match made in heaven.

Featuring Bluetooth and USB connectivity across the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows PC, and Android, this controller is more than just a Nintendo 64 gamepad reimagining. It feels so modern, in fact, that my muscle memory would instinctively reach for the right thumbstick that isn’t there.

I tested out the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller playing The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask from Nintendo Switch Online’s Nintendo 64 Classics catalogue, and it performs so precisely and feels so authentic to playing the game in the early 2000s.
This is what I wish the Nintendo 64 gamepad were, and it should be an essential addition to your collection, especially if you spend a lot of time playing Nintendo 64 games over new releases.
The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is available now at JB Hi-Fi for $79 in Classic Grey, Black, and White.
