Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PC Review — A Visionary Masterpiece

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, NextPlay’s Game of the Year, has been brought to PC by Square Enix and offers the ultimate way to experience one of gaming’s most celebrated narratives. Offering a slew of graphical enhancements, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth may just be one of the best-looking video games I’ve ever seen.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC introduces new features that uplift the game to even greater heights. Lighting has been adjusted to offer significantly more beautiful cutscenes and the sprawling open-world areas you navigate with Cloud and friends.

As someone who has experienced Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, I was not expecting to see a distant level of quality, in particular between the PC version and the PS5 Pro version. But the added textures and Level of Detail truly magnify the amount of polish and budget the original project had. The additional textures on the character models’ faces are the true standout in difference from the console versions. Sephiroth looks even more villainous (yes, it’s possible), and Aerith’s compassionate and carefree personality shines the brightest it ever has.

This port comes with NVIDIA DLSS support, which allows enhanced framerates and upscaled image quality, as well as VRR (variable refresh rate) support.

My PC has some kick to it. I have a 4070 and Intel Core i7 14700 Processor, so I came into this review expecting to play Rebirth with very few issues, and that expectation was met. I could comfortably set the game to the highest graphics quality preset, which includes 120fps, high texture resolutions, shadow quality, and ultra background model detail. There would be times when the game had struggled to keep up with what was happening on screen, but these issues were very sparse.

Having played both console versions, I had to test out the Medium and Low preset settings, and the Medium felt like it was a fraction higher quality than what I saw on the PS5 Pro on Performance mode.

While the game offers keyboard and mouse support, it is essentially built with DualSense in mind, so I would recommend using a controller to play this game. If you are a keyboard and mouse fiend, the ability to customise keybinds is there to be utilised. The game is Steam Deck verified, though its quality and performance could not be tested in this review.

In terms of the game itself, I loved it. It’s been nearly a year since I reviewed the game on PlayStation 5, and my thoughts and feelings have barely nudged from my initial infatuation with the game.

I gave Final Fantasy VII Rebirth a 10/10 on PlayStation 5 and said:

“Square Enix transcends the Final Fantasy VII trilogy to new heights, providing a deeply captivating story and robust combat mechanics. These qualities, paired with entertaining main and side content, cements Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as one of the best RPGs of all time.”

Re-experiencing iconic locations like Gongaga, Cosmo Canyon, and the breathtaking Gold Saucer in 4K, 120fps graphics brings pure joy to the hardcore Final Fantasy nerd in me, and I would recommend this port to anyone who loved Rebirth or new PC players who want to experience one of the best RPGs ever made.
