Egg Squeeze Review — Eggspertly Eggsecuted

After the release of Arctic Eggs earlier this year, I figured we had met the quota for obscure indie games centered around Eggs. Little did I know MATTER GAMES had a little something of their own frying up. Egg Squeeze is surprisingly self-explanatory. You’re given an egg, and you must squeeze it. BUT NOT TOO MUCH, you wouldn’t want to burst the sucker.

Do as you’re told

In a seemingly simple test, you’re tasked with squeezing the egg in your hand by holding the mouse button. With no indicators or hints to when it will break, you must harness your innate ‘psychokinetic intuition’ to estimate the unique breaking point of each hard-shelled egg.

The longer you embrace the egg, the higher your score will be when you release it from your grasp. Hold on too long, however, and the yolk’s on you. You’ll lose your hard earned synergy you’ve gathered and slip slightly further into eggsanity. It’s essentially a game of chicken against an egg.

Making things more interesting are the 8 widgets that you can earn for your screen on playthroughs, including a little Egg buddy that speaks to you and an unnerving live camera feed that has frequent ghostly visitors. Each of these seemingly innocuous gadgets serves their own secret purpose, what all those purposes are I have yet to figure out.

All we’re missing is Subway Surfers

Accompanying all of this madness are close to 50 original tracks created for the game. These vary from soft ambiance, to striking EDM beats, and my least favourite being someone screaming into my ears to let the egg go. All played at random, you’ll never know what you’re going to be listening to next time you squeeze that shell.

After 2 hours of playtime, I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of what this game has in store for me. On the road to gaining 1 billion points, I’ve had several other whacky events transpire that I did not see coming. If you’re performing well enough, the Egg Co. board may even ring you with an offer you can’t refuse.

I don’t want to give away much more than that, I do think it’s a game you should go into with as little knowledge as possible. If you’re free for an hour or two this weekend, you could do a lot worse than playing Egg Squeeze. It’s an egg-celent game that effectively eggs you on to try “1 more squeeze”.
See if you can squeeze out more than the 100 million I managed to score.

Reviewed on PC. Egg Squeeze is now available on PC via Steam.
