Each month your friendly neighbourhood NextPlay team members share what games have caught their eye. We love games, and we love talking about them. So without further ado, let’s check out what the NextPlay Picks of September 2023.
Starfield
Release Date: Early Access – September 1, Full release – September 6
Developer: Bethesda Game Studios | Publisher: Bethesda Softworks | Platform: Xbox Series X|S, PC
“Bethesda games have always been such a staple in my gaming history. The first Bethesda game I ever played was The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which I’m sure many of you can relate to. Over the last 12 years I think I’ve purchased Skyrim at least 7 times on different consoles. Fallout 4 was the next Bethesda game I played and was just as enjoyable in the 80 hours I spent in that game. There is a certain magic in Bethesda games that I’m not sure can ever be replicated by any other studio. As I’m writing this, Starfield Early Access is will be available in about 12 hours and I’m so bloody excited for it.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 (PS5 Release)
Release Date: September 6 | Developer: Larian Studios | Publisher: Larian Studios
Platform: PlayStation 5, PC, Mac
“With Starfield already been spoken for, I want to talk about the ‘other’ RPG making its way to consoles this month. Now i know, it’s been out for a month already on PC, but I think that Baulders Gate 3 coming to PlayStation 5 (and eventually Xbox Series) will be an amazing game that I can finally enjoy on the couch! I’ve already put in around 30 hours into the PC version but I decided to stop and ‘re-roll’ when the PS5 version releases on September 8th, hey, I need some Starfield time too. But I think the highest rated PC game coming to consoles will be amazing to be able to sit back on my couch til all hours of the morning and totally engross myself in. Plus, I only have a 1440p gaming monitor, I want it in 4k BABY!”

Mortal Kombat 1
Release Date: September 19 | Developer: NetherRealm Studios | Publisher: WB Games
Platform: PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S
“I have been a big Mortal Kombat fan for a long time, and Mortal Kombat 1 seems to be bringing some huge changes to the franchise. Mortal Kombat 1 follows on from the story events of Mortal Kombat 11 and which have allowed NetherRealm Studios to almost ‘soft reboot’ the series narrative, which is something I am very interested to see. Not only that, but NetherRealm Studios (in my opinion) make some of the most addictive, exhilarating, and genuinely fun fighting games around. For that reason, Mortal Kombat 1 is definitely my most anticipated game launching in September, and I cannot wait to see the ridiculousness of each Fatality on September 19.”

Mineko’s Night Market
Release Date: September 26 | Developer: Meowza Games | Publisher: Humble Bundle
Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Mac, PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch
“From the instant I saw the trailer for this one, I was captivated but the art style but when I saw the words “Japanese culture” and “many, many cats” in the description, it quickly became one of my most anticipated titles of the year.
Although I can’t help but feel like this game is going to get me right in the feels with it’s storyline and I’m so ready for it.
Oh, and did I mention there’s cats?”
