We Have Our First Look At The Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy Set

2025 is already off to a racing start with Aetherdrift the latest set to launch, letting players race vehicles to victory in the multiversal cup! Yet in true Magic: The Gathering fashion, as one set launches – another is already being teased. Wizards of the Coast has given us our first look at the Final Fantasy Set coming later this year – including debuting the four Magic: The Gathering – Universes Beyond Final Fantasy Commander Decks for the upcoming set!

If the preview video is anything to go by, the Final Fantasy expansion might be one of the best crossover sets we’ve seen, considering all the small references and characters in the teaser. Seeing Moogle’s and Chocobo’s appearing in an MTG has the card fiend in me excited to collect some really gorgeous art in this set.

As a special nod to the legacy of Final Fantasy, the set’s bonus sheet features well-known artworks from the franchise’s history, including art by Yoshitaka Amano and Tetsuya Nomura.

Yesterday, IGN was given an exclusive first look at the crossover, sharing details and an interview on how these decks were designed. The Universes Beyond series already features Warhammer 40,000, Fallout, and most recently – Assassin’s Creed. Universes Beyond sees other IP, not original to Magic: The Gathering joining the game allowing current players to collect their favourite characters. It also gives new players a familiar entry into the game.

Featuring Cloud, Terra, Tidus and Y’shtola, each Commander Deck for the Universes Beyond Final Fantasy set is built around a game from the series. Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10 and 14 each feature, with Wizards of the Coast teasing the deeper references we’ll see when the set launches. If you’d like to see the full interview, you can find it here.

As usual, each Commander Deck pre-con for a set release leans into a differing synergy . At present, we only know each face commander. For the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond Final Fantasy set the Commander Deck playstyles are as follows:

  • Counter Blitz: Tidus, Yuna’s Guardian is a counter-focused deck, that allows players to move counters between target creatures.
  • Limit Break: Cloud, EX-SOLDIER focuses on equipping weapons to raise the creature’s power level.
  • Scions and Spellcraft: Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed is a spell casting deck.
  • Revival Trance: Terra, Herald of Hope gives players control over their graveyards.

Each Final Fantasy Commander Deck will be available in standard and collector editions.

Along with the announcement of the Commander Decks for the Final Fantasy set, we also have our first look at the other products available in this set. Along with the standard set lines of play boosters, collector boosters, prerelease kits, bundles, and gift bundles – there will also be a Starter Kit featuring Cloud and Sephiroth along with two ready-to-play decks.

The Magic: The Gathering – Universes Beyond Final Fantasy set launches June 13, later this year.
