It’s been a huge year for Magic: The Gathering – with a bold new collection of adventures across the planes, capped off with Foundations so it sure feels like the time to celebrate!
From December 6 till January 31, you’ll find some awesome summer events happening at your local Wizards Play Network. The summer promotion returns with its usual chaotic flair, challenging players to play with sets released throughout the year. If you’re unfamiliar with your local game stores or whether they are running events you can find out using the locator tool.
In December stores will be hosting special Chaos Commander events featuring preconstructed commander decks that were released throughout 2024. Players purchase a random commander deck from one of the following 2024 sets – Murders at Karlov Manor, Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Bloomburrow, & Duskmourn: House of Horror. It’s a fun way to celebrate the sets that have come out over the year!
In January, stores will be hosting Chaos Sealed Box events. Draft events can be a lot for new players but thankfully Chaos Sealed does give players a good grounding. Players take 4 play boosters, one random collector booster and a Foundations Jumpstart booster and cook up a Chaos Deck.
I attended a Chaos Sealed Box event last year when I still hadn’t quite returned to MTG and it was a really interesting glimpse into the year’s sets. Having the jumpstart booster creates a good backbone for your deck building, though it can also be a bit restrictive but that really adds to the challenge. It still is quite intimidating to deck build at an event but thankfully LGS staff, judges and other players can usually be incredibly helpful. Many stores also sell the Chaos Sealed Boxes as a take-home pack should players wish to have a draft event

Attendees looking to score that awesome Australian summer-themed playmat will have their work cut out for them. It’s important to recognize that events like this hold significant value for local game stores. These stores often offer products at lower prices, as well as sell individual cards and various TCG accessories as well as hosting play spaces and other community events.
No matter how you play, Summer of Magic is sure to be a chaotic opportunity for you and your friends to celebrate 2024’s MTG sets!
